Embracing Low Carbon Fuels: A Pragmatic Approach to Decarbonising HGVs

The logistics industry is advocating for the adoption of low carbon fuels (LCFs) as a practical solution to reduce emissions from heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

The logistics sector is actively seeking effective strategies to decarbonise heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and meet climate change objectives. While battery electric vehicles (EVs) are often considered the long-term solution, their high costs and limited payload capacities present challenges for widespread adoption. In response, industry leaders are advocating for the inclusion of low carbon fuels (LCFs) such as biomethane, high blend biodiesel, and renewable diesel (HVO) as immediate, viable alternatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This approach aims to provide a more accessible pathway to decarbonisation, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises operating on narrow profit margins.

The call for LCF adoption is supported by a coalition of 48 organisations, including logistics providers, local authorities, fuel suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, and industry bodies. They emphasise the need for a technology-neutral approach to decarbonising HGVs, urging the government to establish a stable policy environment that supports the production and adoption of LCFs. This collaborative effort seeks to ensure that all viable pathways to decarbonise HGVs are considered, recognising that LCFs can complement battery electric vehicles until zero tailpipe emission options become commercially viable for all use cases.

For logistics companies like Hi-Speed Delivery & Storage, embracing LCFs can be a strategic move to enhance sustainability while maintaining operational efficiency. By integrating LCFs into their fleets, businesses can contribute to emission reductions and align with industry best practices. Additionally, offering services such as same-day delivery, pallet networks, storage solutions, and UK overnight deliveries can be optimised to leverage the benefits of LCFs, demonstrating a commitment to both environmental responsibility and customer satisfaction. This proactive approach not only supports the industry's decarbonisation goals but also positions companies as leaders in sustainable logistics solutions.
